2016 Winter Classes

Good-Bye Fall & Hello Winter 2016!
Country Treasures is gearing up for Winter 2016 with many new classes and demonstrations of innovative techniques. Sue has been busy making samples and quilts for sale after a lovely Foliage Season in Chester. We have many new exciting kits available, including Blocks of the Month, packaged for easy completion. Some of these kits include Storytellers designed by Denise Lipscomb for Windham Fabrics, Vintage Sampler designed by Barbara Eikmeier for Paintbrush Studios/Fabri-Quilt, Jewels of the Universe by Jason Yenter for In the Beginning, and Tonga Gemstones designed by A Wing and a Prayer for Timeless Treasures. Carolyn has been ecstatic over the new book called Farm Girl Vintage. She will host a series of Sunday classes to create the beautiful and whimsical Farm Girl Sampler Quilt. Join the Sunday afternoon fun for plenty of quilt fellowship to warm you up during this wintery season! Sue O’Dea will be teaching a wonderful technique to make a very useful ruler bag during a Saturday all-day workshop.

Our staff is hard at work again creating a second trunk show based on the new book Animal Parade 2, hot off the presses. In case you missed out last year, the first Animal Parade book by Cheri Leffler was a hit seller. We still have many of the staff samples on display and some kits available. Our sample quilts for Animal Parade 2 will be ready for display in time for the Vermont Shop Hop in March. Come and view the quilts during and after Shop Hopping.

Please note that we start our schedule early in January to allow for the occasional “Snow Day.” In the event of a weather cancellation, make-up days may extend the schedule beyond that described in this newsletter.

SAVE A TREE! If you have an email address, we would like to be able to make this newsletter available to you through your email. Please send us an email at sue@vermontquilting.com and we will make the switch.

Kindred Spirits Club
We are very excited to announce that we are taking part in a new reproduction fabric and pattern club called Kindred Spirits. We have the complete line of fabrics designed by Jill Shaulis for Windham Fabrics and patterns from Yellow Creek Quilt Designs. The fabric collection is inspired by Civil War era fabrics in a rich, classic color scheme of brick, gold, Cadet blue, green and brown. The first set of six patterns are Pinwheel Puzzle, Two-Way Street, Chasing Friends, Star Pillow, Flower Baskets, and Split Decision. These patterns are available to club members only.

It is easy to join the Kindred Spirits Club—simply call the shop at 802-875-4377 to sign up. There is a one-time fee of $42.00 for this six-month program, which includes all six patterns with free shipping. Each month we will mail you the pattern of the month, free shipping. We will share tips on these fun projects and kits will be prepared to include bindings and backings. Purchase of the kits is optional. Each month a Country Treasures staff member will complete a sample of their favorite Kindred Spirits project. The club begins in January with the Pinwheel Puzzle. After the six months of patterns we will announce a date in July for Show + Tell for all members to display their projects with a drawing for a prize. Please join us for monthly fun!

Weekly Quilt Classes for Winter 2016

Farm Girl Vintage (6 weeks).................................................................. $42.00
Starting: Sunday, January 3th, 1 – 4:00pm
Instructor: Carolyn Niesuchouski
Join Carolyn for a series of Sunday afternoon classes (Jan. 3, 10, 17 & 31, Feb. 7 & 14) to create 48 blocks for a Farm Girl Sampler Quilt. The blocks will be divided into easy sections and worked on during class and as homework. Each class will be full of hints & tips! All quilters are welcome, beginner to advanced. What a great way to put your scraps to good use but if you don’t have sampler-worthy scraps (or if you prefer a more organized color palette) we would be happy to suggest a bundle. Make as many blocks as you want for smaller size projects. Forty-eight 6 ½” blocks make a 62” x 76” quilt. The same number of 12” blocks, without borders, will make an 87” x 114” quilt.

Trust us, they are like potato chips—who can stop with one!  But these Little Gems are definitely lo-cal.  The 15 patterns in this book make paper pieced quilts that are each 12” square. I have 14 done and just one to go to finish the complete set. Talk about instant gratification! All quilters are welcome, beginner to advanced.

Instructor: Carolyn Niesuchouski
This class will concentrate on “free motion” quilting. Students will drop their feed dogs and meander, developing new skills to do different simple patterns in their quilting piece. Advanced Designs will be added for those students who may have previously taken Machine Quilting I & II.

Everyone who has taken this class leaves with a lot of great ideas for gift giving! This is a great fun class using clothesline and fabric strips to create a simple bowl and many other projects. The class is easy and quilting experience is not required. The student must have a sewing machine with a zig-zag stitch to complete this project!

It Takes Two to Fandango
Here are photos of both of Sue’s Fandango quilts, one in 30’s fabrics and one in batik fabrics.  Sue is teaching this fun technique on October 31.

Fall Classes
It is hard to believe our first Fall Class starts in a little over two weeks.  Look for the link for the Fall Newsletter on our homepage at www.vermontquilting.com.  Photos of the class projects can be found on our blog.  But if a class catches your fancy and the day is not convenient for your schedule, please give us a call at 802-875-4377.  Sue or Carolyn may be able to place in a class on a different date that suits your schedule.

2015 Row by Row Experience
Don’t forget the Row by Row Experience goes into hibernation after Sept. 8 and you have until October 31, 2015 to submit your quilt for a prize.  Although some other Vermont shops have already awarded their prizes we still have not had a winner.  Both our Sea-Glass kits and our Maple Quilter license plate are back in stock.  However, the rules will prevent us from selling the kit after Sept. 8 until Nov. 1.

Shall We Fandango

Fandango
Here is a photo of the first of two samples Sue is making for Fandango.  This one uses 30’s fabric scraps.  She is making another using batik scraps.  She has improved the pattern in several ways to make it easier to square up your blocks—typical of Sue.  And no, it’s not paper piecing.

2015 Row by Row Experience – No Winner Yet!
Even though we have had many Rowers dropping in there is still no sign of a winning, completed quilt.  We expect the focus fabric for our mini-bundles to be back in stock next week.  As soon as it arrives we will start cutting the mini-bundles and also calling those quilters on our wait list.

Billings Farm Quilt Exhibition
We are very excited to announce that our very own Christy’s quilt won the ribbon for Staff Favorite.  Here are photos of Christy and her quilt and also Jim’s quilt.  You have until September 20 to view the exhibition at the Billings Farm museum in Woodstock.

Gallery of 2015 Fall Class Projects

A Preview of Fall 2015 Class Projects!

First, here are the initial projects for each of our Weekly Quilting Classes.

The All-Level Quilting classes will start out with the Vermont Shop Hop Tote Bag, a great way to use a batik border stripe.

Sue is teaching classes focused on paper piecing using two books: Little Gems, a set of miniature quilts that can be made with scraps. If you want instant gratification Little Gems is the way to go, but watch out, these little quilts are like potato chips.  The other book is A Flock of Feathered Stars, a collection of intricate filigree stars.  These feathered star patterns can be used to make a single block, an awesome 32” square wallhanging, or an entire quilt!

The Beginners and Advanced Beginners class will kick off with a table runner/lap quilt based on the Play-A-Card quilt.

Carolyn is also teaching a paper piecing class.  She will use a book by Alex Anderson as a launch pad for seven Sunday afternoons of great quilting to make a Paper Piecing Sampler.

Sue kicks off the Weekend Workshops with two projects that use the tube technique:  a Bargello Table Runner and the ever popular Colorsplash quilt in any size.

Come join Carolyn for a fun, exciting class on making Fabric Bowls, baskets, or plates with fabric and clothesline. Though no quilting experience is necessary, you must have a zigzag stitch on your machine. It is very easy to do and stress free!  We do caution that it can be addicting.

Sue will teach the Ohio Star Chain quilt, a pattern designed by our friend Judy Thomas, owner of Yankee Pride Quilts in Burlington.  Mix an Ohio Star with an Irish Chain and get prepared to reap in the complements with this beauty of a quilt!

Machine Quilting I provides an excellent foundation to the world of machine quilting. The quilters who take Carolyn’s class for Beginners and Advanced Quilters will learn to quilt their Pick-A-Card table runner during that class but if you do not have a suitable project pieced, please let us know and Carolyn will help you select a project.  Machine Quilting II is a further exploration into the world of free motion quilting.
Deb Epler is making a guest appearance to teach the Disappearing Hour Glass block.  Once you learn this technique you can make a quilt of any size.  A photo will be posted shortly.

Holiday Magic is a quilt pattern you can use to showcase any 7 ½” fussy cut squares.  Sue made a lap quilt using a modern Christmas fabric line but you can use any fabric that tickles your fancy.

Sue is teaching another of her delightful Mystery Quilts.  Click here ╬ to see the finished quilt.  Gotcha!  Of course, we can’t show you the quilt!

Is the storage box where you keep your 1 ½” strips bursting at the seams?  Come on now, confess, how many of you have more than one, more than five?  Sue will teach you to Fandango, one of the most creative ideas we have seen to turn 1 ½” fabric strips into beauties! Here are photos of a completed quilt and of two colorways (bright batiks and 30’s) in progress.

Carolyn closes out the weekend workshops with an appliqué wallhanging by Kim Diehl called the Folk Art Dish Garden.

If your schedule, or distance, does not allow you to join us in person, why not try one of our online classes:  Farmer’s Wife or Dear Jane?  Here are photos of Sue’s first Farmer’s Wife quilt (yes, she is working on another one) and some of her Dear Jane blocks.  Here also is a Farmer’s Wife quilt made in batiks by Rosalie, one of our online students!

Firecracker Raffle Winner

And we have a winner!
Our 25th anniversary sale wrapped up Sunday, July 12.  304 of the Firecracker Fat Quarter Bundles were purchased and we picked a lucky winner from the basket of raffle coupons, Gail Brown.  Congratulations, Gail!  The prize is a $250 gift certificate to Country Treasures!  We send our thanks to every quilter who participated.

Sue loves her firecracker bundles so much she can’t bear to break them down.  Since she was constantly restocking during the sale that means we still have a table-full of firecracker bundles.  Sue is going to continue to sell them at the sale price of 25 Fat Quarters for $25 while they last.  Throughout the summer you will also find fabric at $6/yard, and many discounted kits and bundles on the sales tables in the classroom.

2015 Row by Row Experience – No Winner Yet!
Even though we have had many Rowers dropping in there is still no sign of a winning, completed quilt.

Scent of the Week
We are stocking a new line of scented candles.  Every week Heather will open one of the scents on the front counter for you to enjoy. This week the scent is Honey Dew.

Billings Farm Quilt Exhibition
Don’t miss the annual quilt exhibition at Billings Farm.  This year quilts made by our very own Christy and Jim were accepted into the exhibit.  Check it out from August 1 through September 20 at the Billings Farm museum in Woodstock.
